StarRupture beginner mistakes to avoid

New to StarRupture? You're about to make mistakes that will cost you hours of progress. Every new player makes these same errors. Learn from others' mistakes and skip the frustration.

x Critical Mistakes (Fix These First)

Mistake #1: Not Placing a Bed Immediately

The Problem: You die and respawn at the default spawn point, miles from your base and all your items.

The Fix: Craft a bed (10 wood, 5 plant fiber) and place it in your shelter on day 1. Sleep in it once to set your spawn point. This is your #1 priority after building walls.

Mistake #2: Building Too Far from Water

The Problem: You waste 30+ minutes every day running back and forth to get water. You die from dehydration while exploring.

The Fix: Before building your base, scout for 10 minutes to find a location within 2 minutes of a river or lake. Water access is more important than anything else.

See our water guide for finding water sources.

Mistake #3: Using Basic Tools Too Long

The Problem: You spend hours gathering resources with slow basic tools when you could upgrade.

The Fix: Craft stone tools on day 1 (2x faster). Upgrade to iron tools by day 3 (3x faster). The time investment pays back within hours.

Mistake #4: Not Locking Your Doors

The Problem: Other players or creatures walk into your base and steal everything or kill you while you're crafting.

The Fix: Craft a door lock (2 wood, 1 stone) immediately after placing your door. Set a PIN code you'll remember. Lock every door and storage chest.

Mistake #5: Ignoring Food and Water

The Problem: You focus on building and suddenly die from starvation or dehydration, losing all your inventory.

The Fix: Always carry 5+ cooked food and 2-3 water bottles. Check your hunger/thirst meters every 10 minutes. Eat when hunger drops below 75%.

Resource Management Mistakes

Mistake #6: Gathering Everything You See

The Problem: Your inventory fills with useless items like flowers and decorative rocks, leaving no space for important resources.

The Fix: Only gather wood, stone, iron, copper, and food in the early game. Ignore everything else until you know what it's for.

Check our resource priority guide for what to farm first.

Mistake #7: Not Stockpiling Iron

The Problem: You craft one iron tool and think you're done, then realize you need 200+ iron for armor and machines.

The Fix: When you find iron, mine at least 100 ore immediately. You'll use it all within 2-3 days. Iron is never wasted.

Mistake #8: Forgetting to Smelt Ore

The Problem: You have 100 iron ore but can't craft anything because you forgot to smelt it into ingots.

The Fix: Build a furnace on day 1 (20 stone). Smelt all ore immediately after gathering. Keep your furnace running constantly.

Building Mistakes

Mistake #9: Building Without Foundations

The Problem: Your structure is unstable and collapses, or you can't expand it properly.

The Fix: Always start with foundations. They provide stability and make building much easier. Use at least a 4x4 foundation grid for your first shelter.

Learn proper building in our base building guide.

Mistake #10: Building Too Small

The Problem: Your 2x2 shelter runs out of space after one day. You can't fit storage, crafting stations, or a bed.

The Fix: Build at least 4x4 (16 foundations) for your first shelter. It only takes 10 more minutes but saves hours of rebuilding.

Mistake #11: No Roof

The Problem: Rain damages your items, you take weather damage, and flying enemies attack you inside your base.

The Fix: Always build a complete roof. It's not optional. Budget 20% of your building materials for the roof.

Combat & Survival Mistakes

Mistake #12: Fighting Without Armor

The Problem: You die in 2-3 hits from basic enemies because you have no defense.

The Fix: Craft at least basic armor (wood or leather) by day 2. Upgrade to iron armor by day 5. Armor is more important than weapons.

Mistake #13: Exploring at Night

The Problem: Stronger enemies spawn at night. You can't see threats. You get lost and die far from your base.

The Fix: Stay in your base at night for the first week. Use nighttime to craft, organize, and smelt. Only explore during the day.

Mistake #14: Not Carrying Backup Supplies

The Problem: You explore far from base, run out of food/water, and die. You lose all your gathered resources.

The Fix: Always carry: 5+ food, 3+ water bottles, 1 weapon, basic building materials (20 wood, 10 stone), and a backup tool. Never leave base without supplies.

Quick Tips to Avoid Mistakes

  • Day 1 priority: Shelter, bed, furnace, stone tools
  • Always carry: Food, water, weapon, building materials
  • Lock everything: Doors, chests, crafting stations
  • Build near water: Within 2-3 minutes walking distance
  • Upgrade tools early: Stone day 1, iron day 3
  • Don't explore at night: Stay in base first week
  • Stockpile iron: You'll need 200+ ingots early game
  • Use foundations: Never build directly on ground
